Fifties - Health of men with HIV through the life stages

When you’re in your 50s, you probably won’t be able to escape the fact that you’re getting older—you may notice new aches and pains or changes in your well-being. There are a few things to watch out for.

54% OF PEOPLE IN EUROPE HAVE HIGH CHOLESTEROL
Europe has the highest percentage of high cholesterol in the world, which is the main cause of heart disease and stroke. HIV itself and some treatments can also raise cholesterol. The risk of stroke and heart disease is further increased if you smoke and have high blood pressure. Talk to your doctor about your cholesterol blood test results.

Colon cancer is the second most common cause of death in Europe, regardless of HIV status. Talk to your doctor about a colon exam, which is recommended for everyone over 50.

FIFTIES – THE RISK OF PROSTATE CARCINOMA BEGINS TO INCREASE
Prostate cancer mostly affects men over the age of 50 and this risk increases with age. About 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer at some point in their lives. Older men, men with a positive family history of prostate cancer, and black African-Americans from the Caribbean are more at risk. There is no increased risk for men with HIV. Talk to your doctor if you have any concerns.

INCREASED FREQUENCY OF ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION
Men living with HIV are at increased risk of erectile dysfunction (inability to achieve or maintain an erection) at this age. It is important to tell your doctor if there is a problem, as it may be a sign of other health problems such as diabetes, kidney disease and heart disease.

BONE DENSITY MEASUREMENT
Men in their 50s don’t experience bone loss as quickly as women – but by the age of 65 or 70 it’s a similar process for both sexes. People living with HIV may be at increased risk of bone loss, so make sure your daily intake of calcium and vitamin D is adequate. Talk to your doctor about the best way to monitor and manage your bone health.
