Almost every person faces mental health challenges at some point, although 80% of suicides are committed by men. A mental health disorder can feel just as bad, or worse, than any other physical illness. Major stresses, including long-term illness such as HIV, can affect mental health and well-being. To get the right care, be open and honest with your health care team at your next appointment.

THE RISK OF HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE IS GROWING
It is typical for blood pressure to rise with age and the risks increase when men reach their mid-40s. This can be accelerated by some HIV treatments, smoking, obesity and eating too much salt, all of which increase the risk of heart attack or stroke.

THE RISK OF DIABETES IS INCREASED JE POVEĆAN
Regardless of HIV status, the risk of type 2 diabetes increases in your 40s. The risk is also higher for people living with HIV. It is good to plan ahead how to reduce future risks. Ask your doctor about your blood glucose results and discuss lifestyle changes you can make.

AVOID DRUG INTERACTIONS
It is important to tell your doctor if you are taking any over-the-counter medicines. He can check for potentially unwanted interactions with your HIV medications.

Drink 2.5 L of water per day
The kidneys have several functions - elimination of harmful products and excess water, which helps control blood pressure, hormone production and mineral balance. Taking care of them is important for overall health. Men should aim to drink 2.5 liters of water a day. Some, but not all, HIV medications can increase the risk of kidney disease. Talk to your doctor about the results of your kidney function tests.
